As we blogged about previously, Apple announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) last month that after a long partnership with Google Maps, it would be including a 3D mapping program of its own when iOS 6 debuts in the fall.
It is said the new Apple maps app will offer nearly all of the features Apple users have come to expect from the Google Maps-based default app, along with a plethora of new features, including gorgeous 3D maps and spoken turn-by-turn directions. There will also be built in Yelp reviews, instant traffic updates, and transit directions.
What’s Better?
The new Maps app will feature spoken turn-by-turn directions, with an ETA that is based on real-time traffic information. If there is an accident or a traffic jam along your route, you will receive the option to switch to a faster route. The Maps app will also be integrated with Siri so iPhone users will be able to use voice commands (something Android users have been able to do for a while).
What’s Missing?
Street View, Google’s street-level imagery, is noticeably missing from the new iOS6 Maps app, but do many people use that on their phone anyway?
